Scheldebrouwerij Merck toch hoe Sterck #

★★★½☆

I had this one at ‘t Arendsnest along with a good Trappist cheese. The bar was dark but the beer looked to me a deep burgundy hue speckled of many small particles topped of a rapidly reducing creamy off-white head. The nose is a pleasant blend of licorice, mint, berries, coffee, bread and the tint of alcohol. Not excessively complex but a good aroma nonetheless. Similarly, the flavor is fairly straightforward with black currant, coffee, chocolate and yeast emerging. Alcohol becomes more present with warming, which actually complemented the cheese brilliantly. I found the texture syrupy at first but the medium carbonation is very well adapted and releases much of the flavor on the back of the tongue. A monotone but appreciable brew that I would not mind enjoying again with a side of cheese.
