About the name of this blog
Putting two unrelated words together is an internet fad that seems to be persisting unreluctantly. Without much thought in the way I was herded to this practice I used the familiar device in naming my own blog. It has come to my attention however, that it doesn’t quite translate the way I had intended it to - especially in the use of the word effervescent. In the English language the word seems to describe a property solely of liquids. I assumed the French definition would be just as good, but unfortunately it needs a little more explanation. Effervescent is a word often used in French for pills that dissolve in water, much like Alka-Seltzer does, producing a frothing trail of small bubbles as it fizzles away into nothingness. But it can also be used to describe a short-lived event, a burst in social interaction. My use of the word in this context implies both meanings. In one way these thoughts or reflections are only as ephemeral as a pill, I might have forgotten all about them tomorrow. On the other hand, they erupt from everyday continuity in a way that might give them significance. I hope this better explains the subtlety that I meant to give, which of course has itself been entirely dissolved. As an aside, I quite enjoy the alliteration produced by the two words. Effervescent Reflections. Try it out loud.
